HOW MICE GET INTO THE HOUSE?

Common entryway are the doors and windows.
Cracks on walls or holes.
Chimney.

WHAT ATTRACTS MICE:

1. FOOD & WATER

One of the obvious reason that attracts any living being is the food. It's the basic need for any creature to survive. Unlike human beings, some animals and insects have a strong sense of smell. Any open food for long time will surely attract some of these in your house.

2. TRASH

An unclean house is a heaven for mouse. Rats love trash cans where they can find and live in it. Trash cans which is not sealed or closed can attract not only mouse but many insects, worms and flies which can transmit deadly diseases.

3. FOOD CRUMBS

Insects, animals and other creatures follow food crumbs looking for something big. Food crumbs makes it very easy for them to find the food and water source which is your house.

4. SHELTER

Animal, birds, insects and even humans need a shelter to safeguard themselves from the dangers like ferocious animals and natural hazards. Some of them will build shelter themselves and others who are helpless (like mouse) will try to depend on the others. Rats can find the shelter anywhere because of their size but what they lack is the food sources. And that's the reason why they try to find a place where they can find all these sources viz, shelter, food, water.

5. DANGER-FREE ENVIRONMENT

A space which is contained by the walls on the four sides with a roof gives more safety than the open area and eliminates predators from getting inside. Cat is the biggest predator for the mouse and to avoid them they try opt for small holes in the wall.

PREVENTION & REMEDIES:

I. PREVENTION

1. REGULAR CLEANING

Both Inside and Outside. Inside - Remove the food crumbs and clean the whole house. It is better to have some electronic equipments like vacuum cleaners which helps in cleaning the house more faster. Clean every dirty area of your house, dispose off unwanted boxes and other materials, do not keep rotten foods.Outside - Empty out the trash frequently and do not leave the trash can open always close the lid and make sure there is no way for any creature to get in. Clean the backyard, get rid of stagnant water, mow the lawn, do not keep unnecessary items open. Also don't forget roof tops and gutter.

2. PATCH HOLES

Find out all the holes and cracks which leads to your house and which gives enough room inside for mouse to dwell. After that, seal all those holes or block them. Look both inside and outside your house. Not only holes but also close windows and doors if you are not around. Or you can shield windows with nets, if it is possible.

3. CONCEAL FOOD ITEMS

Do not keep your food open for long-time for two reasons:
1. Animals and insects have strong sense of smell and the open food attracts them very easily towards your house.
2. By leaving the food open overnight, insects like cockroaches and rodents will contaminate the food with deadly bacteria by eating and crawling over the food. If you eat such food next morning, you may end up with vomiting or sick or, even worse, both.

II. REPELLENTS

1. BAY LEAVES

Mice cannot stand the smell of bay leaves which makes it a good barrier for mice to get inside. Just scatter pieces of bay leaves around the doors, windows and around the food.

2. PEPPERMINT OIL

It's also an effective repellent for mouse. To get rid of mouse just dip a cotton ball in the peppermint oil and place it on the entryways like doors, windows and cracks.

3. CLOVES

You can either use cloves or clove oil to repel. Just place the pieces of clove around the house or dip cotton balls in the clove oil place it.

III. RAT KILLERS

1. CAT

Cats are the natural predators of mice. They will hunt down the mouse from the corner of your house. Mice are born with the fear of cats and this nature will be forever with the mice.
